Social Media Managers~How I Began My Career.

How I Became A Social Media Manager.

People are always asking me how I began my career as a social media manager.
Here’s my story. It’s a little long but worth reading if you are seriously thinking about a career change.
My best friend of twenty-five years Stacy Toten and I had completed our first children’s picture book. We soon began to realize as we were submitting our query letters and proposals that we needed to create an author’s platform.
Anyone who follows my blog knows that I’ve written about and shared many times Reid Tracy’s famous words. “I do not buy books, I buy platforms!” Reid Tracy is the CEO of Hay House Publishing. I’m a huge fan of Louise Hay and Hay House and I follow them closely.
I began creating our online platform. As I expanded our website Intentional Conscious Parenting and we began to grow our audience and spread out amongst the web through several social media sites. Facebook, Twitter, G+, Pinterest, Blogfrog, Awesomize Me, Delicious, LinkedIn and more, over time our audience and connections began to grow. Like minded authors and parents began contacting us. I automatically began sharing and promoting many authors. I’m passionate about conscious parenting and wanted to share their great content with the world. So we hosted online chats, book reviews, author interviews and shared their content everywhere. Two of the authors we worked with in 2010 won the Nautilus Gold and Silver book awards. Publishing companies began contacting us. We no longer had to search out clients or publishing companies. They were coming to us. Several authors and parents asked me why I didn’t offer social media management as a service since I was so good at it.
I honestly didn’t know at the time there was such a thing. So I looked into it. Low and behold there was a huge need for social media managers/marketers. The internet is changing so fast and there are so many options for creating an online presence that businesses and authors are overwhelmed, so I began offering my services.
I knew I had a good grasp on what I needed to know but also was not naive enough to think I knew everything there was to know about social media management. It’s a learning curve that will continue on and on as the internet/blogosphere changes continuously. There are many social media managers who offer an assortment of services.
After much searching I came across an interview with Kate Buck Jr.
She was talking about her newly created program called Let’s Get Social.
LGS is a comprehensive program that thoroughly walks you through becoming a social media manager. LGS covers almost everything and Kate adds to it regularly. It’s a course that keeps on giving, keeping your training refreshed and current. It is very affordable. It includes a private Facebook group. Everyone is very nice and very helpful. There’s always someone to assist you if you need a hand. When you purchase the LGS training you are not just purchasing a full training course full of loaded content, training videos, manuals and more, you are purchasing a support system full of amazing people
.
I continued on my journey by immersing myself into Kate’s course for a whole summer. My friends and family thought I’d abandoned them. I was on a mission. Every step of the way I began implementing what I was learning. Schooling in action. I’m a hands on learner and this was the best approach for me. I really liked the fact that even though the economy was beginning to decline I could create a business where I could work from home and have clients from around the world. No more being tied to crappy wages in a city with no jobs.
I could work from home, bring income into my state and still live in paradise.
Starting out was a bit slow. I decided my niche is authors and holistic practitioners. I took an intern position with an author to get started and my new career began.
Feel free to ask me any questions. I am happy to help.

I love your article! It was very informative. I am also a very social person, but I have been having a hard time finding clients who are not related to me, I think I’ll give Let’s Get Social a try! Thanks

Great story Carol. Now that you got us going, I’m assuming this will become a series ? Ha, ha ! If you post it to the Company pages group, I’ll share it with my other groups. Good writing

Approached more as “A Day In the Life of A Social Media Manager” style, targeted towards small/individual practioners that many in this field may be – not all are located in metropolitan areas, working out of downtown offices. I live in the middle of nowhere – it’s not like theres a networking group or workshops/meetings of peers for also helping in learning and staying up to date with things.

I like your idea. I guess I’ll need to spiffy up so my husband can take some pics of me working. No more working in my robe half the day. 🙂
