Social Media Business Taboo #1 — Setting up too many social media accounts. Your business doesn’t need multiple Facebook pages or Twitter pages. Keep it simple. Less confusion for your customers the better! Give your all to your main pages.
Social Media Business Taboo #2–No Communication! Pages that just sit there are not growing their business, providing excellent customer service or growing their bottom line. Get active. Engage and provide top notch customer service. You built your page for a reason. Don’t just let it sit there.
Social Media Business Taboo #3–Making your social media presence all about you. If all you do is promote and advertise, your audience is going to run away screaming. Alright maybe not screaming but they are going to run away. Share relevant content, fun content, be creative. Use memes, trivia, customer stories, photos, ask questions, share your personal side, etc. Add in products intermittently. Experiment to see what works for “your” audience. What works for one company doesn’t always work for another.
Social Media Business Taboo #4–Ignoring the opportunity to engage. Anytime someone responds to your page follow it up with some kind of engagement. A comment or like. If a potential customer asks a question, follow up with an answer as soon as possible. It’s very unprofessional to ignore your customers or not take them seriously. Word of mouth travels fast. Build a community!
Social Media Business Taboo #5–Ugh, I really abhor this one. Not having social sharing buttons on your website. Make it real easy for visitors to share your latest blog post, main page and favorite items. Don’t make them search for sharing buttons. Think about it. When you discover something really cool you want to share it with your friends and family. If you have to walk through too many steps to share you’ll skip it won’t you? Make it easy! If your website is a WordPress site add a simple sharing plug-in such as Shareaholic.
Social Media Business Taboo #6–Not having social media follow buttons on your main website. Never assume a new customer is going to take the time to search for your company on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or any other social media site. Your main website needs to have accessible social follow buttons. Make it real easy for customers to follow you.
What mistakes do you see businesses making with social media?
Quick question. Do you expect your favorite businesses to be available on social media as well? Is it important for them to be on Facebook? Twitter? Anywhere else?
